In Dreaming the Collection 2013, the act of dreaming served as a metaphor and working method through which we explored alternate ways of interpreting and performing a collection. For this project, we used works of art in the NGV collection as catalysts for a series of dreaming events. Seven works featuring sleeping figures formed the basis for seven nights’ dreams which we recounted through scripts and performances. Drawing on ideas derived from Democritus, an ancient Greek philosopher who hypothesised that images emanated from material objects and could enter the pores of a sleeping person and directly influence their dreams, we slept of reproductions of the sleeping figures to divine their dreams and offer alternative interpretations of works in the NGV collection fueled by the logic and narratives of dreams.
