Presented as part of MONA FOMA 2022, artists Veronica Kent and Jon Smeathers take on the Instrument Builders Project mantle in the form of an Atelier producing a collection of ‘personally tuned wearable acoustic pieces’ that can be experienced by visitors during bespoke fittings.


Over the past year, IBP curators, Lisa Campbell-Smith, Kristi Monfries, and LA Artistic Director, Joel Stern, have developed a new model to continue to provide a platform in the face of challenges brought about through the pandemic, Extending the space for experimentation a through research, critical reflection, and development with artists from Australia, Indonesia and Japan.


Founded in 2012 by curators Joel Stern and Kristi Monfries, and now incorporating co-curator Lisa Campbell-Smith, Instrument Builders Project (IBP) is a transdisciplinary project focused on experimental sound and collaboration, that over its previous five iterations in Indonesia, Australia and Japan has generated an international network of activity, ongoing relationships and new works.
